HIGH LEVEL PANEL DISCUSSION ON AFRICA’S STAKE IN THE CLIMATE CHANGE TALKS |
|
Kenya hosted the 2nd meeting of the Parties to the Kyoto Protocol (COP/MOP 2), in conjunction with the 12th session of the Conference of the Parties to the Climate Change Convention (COP 12), in Nairobi from 6th - 17th November 2006. The global issues and debates around climate change, which is attributed directly or indirectly to human activity that alters the composition of the global atmosphere, have bordered on the increased emission of greenhouse gases (GHG) that are argued to have accelerated desertification, raised global surface temperatures, changed rainfall patterns, caused rising sea levels etc.
In this regard, HBF held a panel discussion titled “Africa’s stake in the Climate Change Talks” on 14th November 2006 at the Grand Regency Hotel’s Crystal Ballroom from 12.00pm to 4.30pm. The session brought together high level panelists including the Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Prof. Wangari Maathai, Prof. Ogunlade Davidson of the Inter-governmental Panel on Climate Change amongst others. The Heinrich Boell Foundation’s co-president, Barbara Unmüssig was also in attendance. Due to the fact that the industrial sector relies on energy production, mainly from non-renewable sources, it implicitly is therefore one of the major contributors to GHG emissions, and the main focus of the discussion.

Special Gender Forum, Wednesday 24th May 2006 |
|
The Foundation, in collaboration with the National Commission on Gender and Development, UNIFEM, Ford Foundation, African Women's Development and Communication Network (FEMNET) and African Woman and Child Feature Services (AWC) held a special gender forum on 24th May 2006. This was a special gender forum, shifting from the pre-planned scheduled theme, to launch a collaborative initiative of the above organizations dubbed Nairobi +21.
The Nairobi +21 initiative was a series of activities that sought to mark the 21st anniversary of the 3rd UN World Women's Conference, which was hosted by the Government of Kenya and held in Nairobi in 1985. Over 20,000 women from around the world came to Nairobi to participate in the conference. The purpose of marking the 21st anniversary of the conference was to celebrate the various victories won since then and to reflect on the challenges that remain. To this end, the National Commission on Gender and Development as the lead agency, in collaboration with the above organizations short listed various activities intended to build up to a mega conference scheduled for 28th July 2006 to be held at the KICC. This conference event was meant to coincide with the actual dates of the 1985 conference, bringing together, women luminaries, women’s organizations and the general public in a three tiered structure assessing what Nairobi was, what it achieved and what challenges prevailed with regards to women’s empowerment.
The overall objective of this commemoration was to create an inter-generational linkage between those that were, and those that are for the sake of sustainable consciousness. As such, the main focus was to target the younger generation.

4Cs
- Coffee Workshop in Kenia, 19 October 2005 |
|
The Common Code for the Coffee Community
(4C) is a multi-stakeholder initiative to develop and support the
application of a sustainability system for the production, post-harvest
processing and trading of green "mainstream" coffee. Representatives
of the worldwide trade & industry, production sectors and civil
society co-operate in this approach to enable continuous improvement
of the sector through transparency along the supply chain, efficiency
and higher profitability for producers. With best management and
agricultural practices, an inclusive code of conduct to measure
performance and a support system for the application of the sustainability
practices, the 4C system provides a long-term improvement for the
"mainstream" sector.
The workshop aimed at informing local stakeholders and political
representatives on 4C sustainability approach, discussing concerns
of Kenyan government and convincing stakeholders on business opportunity
through applying sustainability practices according to the 4C. Download

Femme
Globale: Gender
Perspectives in the 21st Century International Congress, Humboldt
University in Berlin, 8 -
10 September, 2005 |
|
A decade after the UN World Conference on Women in
Beijing, it was time to critically follow-up on the implementation
of the adopted Beijing Platform for Action. “Femme Globale” offered
an outstanding opportunity for critical assessment. The congress provided
a forum to place gender equality at the very top of the political
agenda on the national and international level; identify challenges
and new perspectives in the area of gender policy; discuss strategies
and recommendations; design mobilization and politicization strategies;
and strengthen established networks and find new partners.

Summer
School 2005- Engendering
Economic Policies in a Globalising World: Trade, Agriculture, And
Food Security |
|
The Summer School
2005 of Heinrich-Böll-Foundation, the third one on “Engendering
Economic Policies in a Globalising World”, focused on the WTO-Agreement
on Agriculture (AoA), on the progressive liberalisation in the agricultural
sector and the globalisation of free trade in food. Women are specially
affected by agricultural politics as small-scale farmers, as workers
on fields, in food production and the trade chain, as consumers,
and providers of care and nutrition in private households. The multilateral
Agreement on Agriculture has been one of the most controversial
issues within the WTO, and it will be once again a highly contested
area at the forthcoming WTO-Ministerial-meeting in December 2005
in Hong Kong.
The Summer School
2005 aimed at building capacities with regard to macro-economic
policies in the field of agriculture and wanted to demystify the
pretended gender neutrality of trade agreements, liberalisation
processes, and the WTO-regime. It analysed the linkages between
macro-economic policies and micro-economic structures, in particular
women’s livelihoods using concepts and tools of feminist economics. September 1-5, Berlin, Germany.
