CAPACITY BUILDING PROGRAMME

Empowering East African Civil Society

In order to strengthen the role of civil society, the capacity building programme targeted activists in environmental and developmental NGOs. The training courses were intended to enable the participants be actively involved in preparation towards the WSSD. The courses focused on environmental diplomacy, developments from Rio 1992 and substantive challenges towards Johannesburg 2002. With a particular focus on the poverty agenda, water issues and gender aspects, participants improved their skills in information gathering, advocacy and media engagement. The courses were planned to guarantee a solid development of knowledge and skills. Heinrich Böll Foundation conducted the training courses in Cairo, Nairobi, San Salvador and Rio de Janeiro.

Twelve selected participants from the training courses were given a chance to extend the capacity building by doing internships at key environmental and developmental NGOs and institutions in Brussels and Washington. The aim was to give them a deeper insight into international politics and to improve their knowledge of specific issues which they could use in their local work. They were supported and trained by the local offices of the Heinrich Böll Foundation in Washington and Brussels.

The participants of the internship programme also attended the WSSD International PrepComm III in New York. They got the chance to follow the official negotiations, link up with other representatives from civil society and identify opportunities to feed into the WSSD process.
