THE GENDER FORUM
Reflection,
Discussion, Creating Awareness
Monthly debates in Kenya and Ethiopia
The Gender Forum is the Gender programme's
flagship in Kenya and Ethiopia with successful monthly public
debates on various issues.
The Gender Forum was initiated in Addis
Ababa in 1997 and was established within the context of a lack
of independent women's organizations in the country. In addition, the
limited number of gender experts and professionals in Ethiopia were working
as consultants and as gender coordinators in various governmental and
non-governmental organizations without a cooperative network. The Gender
Forum in Ethiopia has tackled various topics, ranging from violence against
women to feminization of poverty.
The idea of a Gender Forum in Kenya was based
on the success of the Gender Forum in Ethiopia. The Forum was hailed by
the Chairman of the Constitution of Kenya Review Commission, Professor
Yash Pal Ghai, as a valuable platform for women to air their views on
the constitutional review among other issues.
The main objective of the Gender Forum is
to create a medium for reflection, discussion and debate on gender
and gender related issues, with a view to creating awareness that gender
really matters and should be part of strategic decision and policy making
issues.
