RENEWABLE ENERGY TECHNOLOGIES
(RETS)
Cogeneration
and Geothermal Energy
The Foundation, in collaboration with the African
Policy Research Network (AFREPREN), has over the last year conducted a
regional study on the status of renewable energy technologies (RETS) in
the East and Horn of Africa Region, with a focus on Cogeneration and Geothermal
Energy, and the potential contribution that these clean energies can make
to Africa's development.
The study was conducted in Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania and Ethiopia as a follow
up to the Water, Energy, Health, Agriculture and Biodiversity (WEHAB)
issues that governments committed to meet at the World Summit on Sustainable
Development (WSSD) in Johannesburg in September 2002, and also to assess
whether they have met the 10% target of national energy needs generated
from RETS. These studies have been disseminated in national workshops,
shared at a high-level policymakers forum with African Energy ministers,
presented as a side event at the Renewables 2004 Bonn Conference in June
2004 and published in easily readable forms.
We present the key study findings, events, proceedings, publications and
future outlooks on this continuing endeavour.
