WOMEN AND THE CONSTITUTION

Conference held October 2001

In October 2001, the Heinrich Böll Foundation organized a Regional conference on "Women and the Constitution". The goal of the conference was to bring together professionals working on womens' legal issues to analyse the constitutions and laws in the region and to critically examine how these adversely affect women in decision making, property ownership and participation at both family and national levels.

Experts from several African countries such as Kenya, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Somaliland, Southern Sudan and Uganda presented papers on constitutions and constitution making. Participants discussed various issues emerging from the presentations and shared the challenges that are encountered when women try to mainstream gender into the constitution. In addition, they proposed various strategies for redressing gender imbalances created by the constitution and constitution making process.

The proceedings of the conference were published in a publication entitled "Gender Gaps in Our Constitutions" which is available for download on the link to the right.
